During sixth grade social studies, students will study the development of human civilization from Prehistoric times to the European Renaissance. We will explore the attributes of paleo and neolithic life; ancient river civilizations like
Mesopotamia, Egypt, and China; Greece and Rome, foundational civilizations for our American culture; and the development of Europe during the middle Ages. Students will also have two opportunities to research project on Egypt and River Civilizations. We will be analyzing these civilizations through the framework of the Universals of Culture. These Universals are found in every culture throughout time and give students a clear structure with which to characterize and compare the different civilizations we study. Students will also get a basic understanding of the five world religions: Hinduism, Buddhism,
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.
